About Bariatric Surgery > Defining Morbid Obesity

Obesity in America has more than doubled in the last 30 years.  Today, over 32% of American adults are obese.

Obesity is a medical term used for ranges of weight that are unhealthy for a given height.  Your height and weight can be plugged into a formula to calculate a number called the Body Mass Index (BMI).  Your BMI typically correlates with your amount of body fat.

Morbid obesity is a more severe form of obesity.  According to the National Institutes of Health Consensus Report, morbid obesity is a serious disease and must be treated as such.  It significantly increases the risk for health problems and even premature death. Criteria for morbid obesity are either of the following:

1. BMI of 40 or higher

or

2. BMI between 35 - 39 with any of the following health problems:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
